Press Release for
Slow Birding
The Art and Science of Enjoying the Birds in Your Own Backyard
by Joan E. Strassmann
In the last few years, so many of us have stepped outside and noticed what we never had before—our lovely neighbors in the sky. While birding has exploded as a hobby, many are intimidated with the demands of traditional birding guides.
SLOW BIRDING (10/25/22, TarcherPerigee, Hardcover) is a one-of-a-kind guide to birding locally that encourages slowing down to notice the spectacular birds in everyday places. Evolutionary biologist Joan E. Strassmann tells colorful stories of the most common birds to be found in the United States—birds we often see but might not have considered deeply before.
This accessible guide is bursting with fascinating and surprising bird facts, like:
- Northern Cardinals thrive in the city, where they are free from predators.
- White brows on a male White-Throated Sparrow indicate that he is likely to be a philanderer.
- Blue Jays are the sixth most googled bird
- American Coots sometimes sneak eggs into other hen’s nests
With detailed portraits of individual bird species, enlightening information on the scientists who have discovered them, and engaging activities for new and veteran birders alike, SLOW BIRDING is the perfect guide to appreciating the beauty of the birds in our own backyards.
This meeting will be held virtually via Zoom. Check your email or the Facebook page for login instructions.
