Seabirds of Virginia – Andrew Rapp
& Pre-Meeting Holiday Cookie Sharing
Join in on for this December’s presentation as we head offshore and dive into the seabirds of Virginia. Andrew will discuss the Virginia seabird scene as well as open the door to the complicated world that is seabird habitat. He will introduce seabird identification and the challenges that come with it. The presentation will wrap up with how the wonders of offshore life are connected with Piedmont Virginia. Andrew hopes that after this presentation you will be interested in and feel prepared to join a Virginia pelagic trip.
Andrew Rapp has been a lifelong birder based out of Charlottesville, Virginia. He grew up in the Blue Ridge Young Birders Club as one of the founding members and attended many Piedmont Virginia Bird Club events. He continued his education at the College of William and Mary receiving a double major in Biology and Environmental Science and Policy. He worked on many bird projects while in college and after graduating including working for the Connecticut, Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina Breeding Bird Atlases. He also worked for the Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory as the Kiptopeke Hawkwatcher and Migratory Entomologist for two seasons. He currently works as a Field Zoologist for the Virginia Natural Heritage Program where he monitors populations of state rare animals. His inspiration for the presentation came late in college when he became deeply fascinated in pelagic wildlife. To get up close and personal experience with offshore wildlife, he worked for several months on a fishing boat out of Hatteras, NC studying marine wildlife in the Gulf Stream. Since then he has ventured offshore dozens of times representing several tour companies around the mid-Atlantic. He is excited to come back to Charlottesville and share his passion for seabirds with the Piedmont Virginia Bird Club.
** Please note we have the meeting start time set to 6:45. At 6:45 we will meet to share some holiday cheer. Please consider bringing some cookies to share! The main presentation will begin at 7pm
