The Piedmont VA Bird Club is offing a 3-day birding adventure for club members to the Allegheny Highlands of Virginia/West Virginia, May 24 – 26. Explore the Shenandoah Valley west into the high elevation habitats of George Washington and Monongahela National Forests. Emphasis will be on breeding warblers, thrushes and raptors typically not found in the Piedmont.
Details:
• Limit 12 participants, in no more than three vehicles
• Cost: $160/person, payable to the PVBC
• Leave Friday morning, return Sunday afternoon
• Overnight accommodations at these two sites (near to each other):
https://www.virginiabirds.org/
• Food: Lunch and dinner on Friday and Saturday, and breakfast Saturday and Sunday will be supplied and included in the cost. Participants are welcome to bring their own snacks and alcoholic beverages.
We’ll travel by vehicle making stops along the way, with short hikes, visiting private farms as well as seldom birded National Forest sites and a Nature Conservancy Preserve. Much of the time we’ll be in remote areas with no cell reception, and limited bathroom availability (except for the woods)…. Note: We hope to see as many birds as possible, but respecting the VA Society of Ornithology’s birding ethics guidelines we will not use electronic playback to lure birds into sight.
This will be a fun outing involving driving on back roads, short hikes, and downtime for relaxing. 100 + species are possible.
