The 2022 (officially 2023) Charlottesville Christmas Bird Count took place on Sunday, December 18. It was partly cloudy all day with temperatures between 34 and 41 F. The wind was from the northwest and shifted between 3.6 – 8.7 mph. Sixty participants in 20 parties recorded 77 species, two less than last year. Two rare bird reports were submitted: Rufous Hummingbird by Gus Colom and Loggerhead Shrike by Brad Odom. The species of hummingbird was confirmed by Bruce Peterjohn, retired Chief of the Bird Banding Laboratory, USGS.
