Alex Wilke, Coastal Scientist from The Nature Conservancy, is the speaker for our virtual meeting on May 4th.
Did you know that the Eastern Shore of Virginia is one of the most important places for shorebirds in the entire Western Hemisphere? It is! We will discuss the global plight of shorebird populations as they face threats such as habitat loss, disturbance and climate change. We will also explore the important coastal habitats that we have right here on the Eastern Shore that support many of these shorebird species and learn more about the work that we at the Volgenau Virginia Coast Reserve and our partners are doing to protect and manage these species.
Alex Wilke leads the Migratory Bird program at The Nature Conservancy’s Volgenau Virginia Coast Reserve on the Eastern Shore of Virginia – protecting and stewarding over 50 miles of wild barrier island coastline for the benefit of migratory birds. Her program includes various elements of nesting bird population and productivity monitoring, human disturbance management, and mammalian predator management. She works closely with federal and state partners from throughout the Western Hemisphere to advance regional, national and international bird conservation initiatives.
Her work at TNC began 20 years ago when she came to Virginia to pursue her graduate work in wildlife conservation. From there, she joined TNC full-time and spent several years supporting and growing the Conservancy’s efforts to protect and manage `migratory birds on the Shore, with a particular emphasis on shorebirds and colonial waterbirds.. Alex received a BS in Biology from Bates College and an MS in Biology at William & Mary. Her graduate work focused on the conservation status and reproductive ecology of American Oystercatchers nesting on Virginia’s barrier islands, a species that she still works closely with today.
