PVBC Meeting Minutes: April 2, 2025

Club Vice President, Callan Bentley, opened the meeting promptly at 7 p.m., in person at the Ivy Creek Natural Area Educational Building, with 21 people in attendance.
Vice President’s Introductory Comments – Welcome & Announcements
Callan welcomed everyone. Callan also reminded members that the Board currently is seeking a volunteer to become the Membership Chair on the Board for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Leigh Surdukowski reported about Ivy Creek’s hummingbird garden and its hummingbird feeder pilot project. She asked for volunteers from May to September to assist with weeding and watering the garden and with cleaning and refilling the hummingbird feeders.
Membership Update
Membership Chair, Scott Connuck, reported that PVBC currently has 201 active members as compared to 197 active members at this time last year. Please email Scott at [email protected], if you are not sure if it is time for you renew your membership.
Upcoming Field Trips and Events
Field Trip Chair, Alex Brubaker, reported on the following upcoming field trips:
First Saturday Bird Walk at Ivy Creek Natural Area, on Saturday, April 5th, at 7:30 a.m. Meet in the main parking lot at 1780 Earlysville Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903.
Quarry Gardens, on Sunday, April 13, at 8 a.m. The Quarry Gardens’ address is 1643 Salem Road, Schuyler, VA. Please carpool if you can.
Albemarle Ciderworks, on Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. Will Kurtz will lead this walk at 2600 Rural Ridge Lane, North Garden, VA.
Birding Before Work, from Monday, April 28th through Friday, May 9th, from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. An experienced birder will lead bird walks at select places Monday through Friday for the weeks of April 28th and May 5th. Please see PVBC website or PVBC Facebook page for details about locations.

Featured Presentation
Programs Chair, Joanna Vondrasek, introduced our very own PVBC Board Members, Callan Bentley and Cory Swift, to present an eBird 101 Workshop. It was an excellent, well-organized exploration of the basic and intermediate tools available through eBird. The slide presentation can be found in recent membership updates. Thank you!
The meeting was adjourned and the next Club meeting announced.
The Club meets next on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at 7 p.m., at the Ivy Creek Natural Area Education Building, in person. Currently, Ashely Peele is scheduled to present about the Appalachian Mountain Joint Venture program and its efforts at avian conservation.
