Jennifer Scott is Associate Professor of Biology at Germanna Community College where she teaches general biology courses. She holds a PhD in Higher Education and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in biology. As a graduate student, she studied environmental impacts on freshwater mussel populations in rural southwestern Virginia. The community of freshwater mussels in southwestern Virginia is the most diverse of anywhere in the world, yet rivers and streams in the area are exposed to mining, industrial, and agricultural runoff resulting in many populations of mussels being threatened or endangered.
After graduate school, she worked as an environmental consultant to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Since that time, she committed to educating community college students on important environmental topics such as species extinction, water resource management, and climate change. She is a certified Climate Reality Leader through the Climate Reality Project with a mission of spreading awareness of climate change and, most recently, she is a founding member of Cultivating Resilient Communities (CRC) with the mission of empowering community members to identify steps toward creating more climate-resilient environments.
