The 2021 Charlottesville Christmas Bird Count took place on Sunday, December 19, 2021. There was some rain in the morning but it cleared in the afternoon, with light northerly winds and temperatures in the 40s F. Fifty-two people participated in the count in 19 parties. Seventy-nine species were reported (1 more than last year) including 3 rare species: House Wren, Baxter Beamer, Selasphorus sp. (until banded, it would be almost impossible to determine if it was a Rufous Hummingbird, S. rufus or an Allen’s Hummingbird, S. sasin), Baxter Beamer, and Baltimore Oriole, John Rowlett and Gretchen Gehrett. We also had some historically high numbers on four species: Ring-necked Duck 60, Wilson’s Snipe 23, Ring-billed Gull 282, Brown Thrasher 5.
