9/6/2020 Dear Monticello Bird Club Members,
The MBC Board believes that it is time to change the name of our club as it no longer reflects the values of inclusion that we all desire for the club. The reason for the change is that people were enslaved at Monticello. This information was emailed to the club on September 6, 2020.
The Board does not take this decision lightly and knows that there are processes, costs, and time involved in a name change. We also want to include the club in the name change process and invite your comments. All club members will be invited to vote for new names prior to the changes taking place. In the meantime please send any comments on the topic to birders@monticellobirdclub.
We have a number of ideas that recognize that many of our members are not from Charlottesville. These suggestions include:
- Virginia Piedmont Bird Club
- Central Virginia Bird Club
You may have additional ideas for names and we welcome those suggestions. After we hear from you, we will hold the vote to begin the renaming process.
