Birds of prey were the focus of our afternoon trip to the Green Springs area of Louisa County. Twelve birders braved the 30 degree temps and windy conditions, finding Ring-billed Gulls and Buffleheads at our first stop. We proceeded to the open fields along Green Springs Road, then E. Jack Jouett Road. and although we didn’t see any Short-eared Owls, we had good looks at several male and female Northern Harriers. Other raptors observed were American Kestrel, Red-tailed Hawk, Cooper’s Hawk and a pair of Great Horned Owls calling at dusk. It was a good outing overall, with a memorable view of the rising Supermoon.
