President Doug Rogers opened the meeting introducing the new Hospitality chair, Patty Kalbfleisch. Patty is replacing Priscilla Kingston who, along with husband Ron, welcomed club members and guests for many years. Several first-time visitors were welcomed and introduced themselves. There were thirty-three present.
An unusual bird activity was reported regarding a Red-bellied Woodpecker that was taking sugar water from a hummingbird feeder. There was discussion about when to stop putting out the feeders. Generally the Ruby-throated Hummingbird migrates by the end of October, but there are rare instances where the Rufous Hummingbird, a western species which has been sighted in our area, could possibly feed all winter.
The annual bird seed sale is underway. The last date for ordering is October 26 and the pick-up date at the Department of Forestry warehouse is November 5.
Maynard Davis gave the membership report. To date we have 111 paid members. This is up from 2015 year-to-date, but our target is 175.
Stauffer Miller reported that Janet Paisley is asking for more participation with the Breeding Bird Atlas. Jenny Gaden will be involved with this project next year.
Gabriel Mapel has organized three field trips for October, which are listed on the website. The October 15 trip is to Rockfish Gap; and there are two more on October 22 and 29: Secluded Farm with Dave Hogg and Penn Park with Leigh Surdukowski.
Myrlene Staten, Membership chair, is looking for enthusiastic photographers to participate in the club’s photo contest. She is also soliciting interest from the Charlottesville Camera Club.
Nancy Newman reported issues with wasps and/or bumble bees invading her bluebird box.
